Congo Boy
Rafiki Fariala’s autobiographical story of a young rapper responsible for his family in the midst of a civil war.
17-year-old Robert lives in Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic. As a refugee who fled the war in Congo, he and his family have found shelter there, but now violence is reaching his new home town. When his parents are arrested while trying to leave the country with forged documents, Robert is left to take care of his four younger siblings. In addition to final exams, odd jobs and just trying to make ends meet, he continues to rap and write poetry giving voice to his experiences. When a music competition is held in town, Robert sees it as an opportunity to win the prize money and get his parents out of prison. However, in a city torn apart by conflict, taking care of one’s family, continuing one’s education and pursuing one’s dreams are anything but easy.
