For the fourth year already, the international #youngfilmmaker programme showcases the latest films by young filmmakers. The programme is divided into three distinct screenings that premiere the winning works from local film festivals and the Just Film scholarship competition.
Introducing the #noorfilmitegija 3 directors! Take a look at who they are and what interesting things they have to say!
"Intertwined Souls" (Director Mariann Märka)
"I have been closely connected to various forms of art throughout my life, but I only started working in film a few years ago. Previously, I created various short videos for school and for fun with my friends. What excites me about filmmaking is the opportunity to combine the different interests and skills of myself and my friends. 'Intertwined Souls' is our first major project, where we wanted to explore Estonian folklore in a more modern way."
"Find Me on Heaven's Mural" (Director Anna Pärt)
Anna Pärt (born 2005) takes on the role of director for the first time with her short film "Find Me on Heaven's Mural". Her previous experience with filmmaking was limited to composing film music, but now the Old Town of Tallinn became both the shooting location and source of inspiration for her debut film.
"Hidden" (Director Kirke Kask)
"I am Kirke Kask, born in 2005, and currently finishing my high school studies. 'Hidden' is my third short film — my previous works, 'Name' and 'Inner Melody', have been featured in film festivals and received recognition from both the jury and the audience. 'Hidden' is set in a dystopian world where emotions are lost. The inspiration for this story came from knowing that many people struggle with handling their emotions. The film asks rhetorically — why can't we deal with our emotions?"
"The Kid" (Director Mathilda Mänd)
"I was born in 2006, and my interest in film started in the first year of high school when I joined the Kinomaja Film School. I have been involved in filmmaking there for three years now. I love making films about the magic of everyday life and the little things that bring us joy. 'The Kid' was created with the intention of emphasizing that it doesn’t matter how old you are — we all live in this wonderful world together."
"The Cheat" (Directors Endrik Prank, Kaspar Padjus)
Endrik Prank (born 2005) has been interested in the film world since he was a child, but his passion grew during high school when he began making short films with his friends. He has been involved in several award-winning short films featured at Estonian film festivals, taking on various roles such as producer, actor, cinematographer, etc. Some of the most notable films are "MidaVärki?", "Klaas", and the 2023 Just Film #youngfilmmaker Best Film award winner "Kolmas Puu Vasakult". Endrik’s new short film "The Cheat" is important to him as it marks his directorial debut, and with this film, he wants to show how much can be conveyed through simplicity.
"A Dance That Lasts" (Director Tuule Jõks)
Tuule Jõks (born 2004) is a film student who loves postcards, warm-hearted people, theatre, and art that inspires thought and action.
"I’ve had some exposure to films here and there, trying to get a little taste of everything, both in technical and creative aspects. As a result, I have had the chance to try out various roles on set, and I feel like I am still searching for my 'true' role. I was inspired to make this film by the opportunity to be part of the lovely bond between a grandmother and grandchild, and their small traditions. Human relationships, especially family dynamics, have always fascinated me — they are so special, fragile, sometimes incomprehensible and painful, but most importantly, they are incredibly beautiful and precious."
