For the fourth year already, the international #youngfilmmaker programme showcases the latest films by young filmmakers. The programme is divided into three distinct screenings that premiere the winning works from local film festivals and the Just Film scholarship competition.
Here's more information about this year's #youngfilmmaker participants and the stories behind their films:
"Until We Stay Half-Full"
(Directors: Arete Sokk, Astrid Ulpus)
Arete Sokk (18): "The idea for Until We Stay Half-Full began during a winter in France, where I dreamt of warm summer idylls. I wrote a scene about a boy in love with the sun and a jealous girl. While the film has evolved, the essence of their unique dynamic and the summer heat still remains."
Astrid Ulpus (18): "My interest in film as an art form started a few years ago, and since then, I’ve explored different short formats, like short documentaries and dance films. Until We Stay Half-Full has been a long time in the making, but it wasn’t until one spontaneous biology class that we decided to truly begin. It has been one of the most fulfilling experiences, and I hope that this small piece of us reaches the audience."
"Repeating Day"
(Director: Elisabeth Parts)
"I'm Elisabeth Parts, born in April 2006. I've assisted in the art department for Ciconia Ciconia and was the lead artist for A Long Time Ago. When writing the script for Repeating Day, I wanted to create a story that would feel like a repetitive cycle, allowing viewers to find their own meanings."
"Shades Are Silent"
(Director: Mattias Mängel)
"I'm a young director with prior experience in several short film projects, including working as an editor for a PÖFF-selected film. I've also worked on various school media projects. For Shades Are Silent, I not only directed but also wrote the script. My approach blends adventure, suspense, and mysticism, drawing inspiration from earlier projects and from Estonia’s rich mythology, which I find fascinating for thrillers."
"Loose Ends"
(Director: Liisa Jõgi)
"I'm from Rakvere, born in 2006, and currently studying in high school. Loose Ends came from a feeling that human relationships are often misunderstood or left unresolved, but there’s a certain magic in that ambiguity. So many people push relationships and emotions aside to feel independent, only to realize too late how crucial it is to hold on to them."
"Faluteki"
(Directors: Jan Jambrek, Lucija Sabolić, Teodora Tintor, Majda Vukalović)
"A Long Time Ago"
(Director: Anne Maria Vaher)
Anne Maria Vaher found her passion for filmmaking when she started making short films with her classmates in high school. Since then, filmmaking has been an integral part of her life. A Long Time Ago is her first short film that she both wrote and directed.
These filmmakers have poured their creativity into their projects, and we're excited to see their visions come to life on the big screen!
